The first thing that strikes you about Man Ray’s portrait pieces, is how contemporary they look. A particularly good example of this would be his portrait of Helen Tamiris taken in 1929, who was an American choreographer and muse of Man Ray. Or it could have been taken yesterday, if you were unaware of it’s provenance. Man Ray could be credited with the invention of ‘glamour’ photography as we know it today – culminating with his iconic portrait of Catherine Deneuve taken for the British Sunday Times in 1968.
