Automobiles used to be designed by humans for visual pleasure. Today, automobiles are designed by robots. In many ways, the degeneration of automobile design closely parallels the impoverishment of industrial design since the 70’s. Aesthetics used to be built into the functionality of everyday objects. In contemporary design, form strictly follows function – to the detriment of everything else. Pity.
Couldn’t agree more. I used to have a ’67 Mercedes Fintail. Till someone torched it.

Probably torched because it was best looking car on your road. Fintails were all the rage in the mid-sixties – my Dad had a Cortina Mk1 with the ‘peace symbol’ rear lights and pinched fins. There was so much pointy, sharp metal in the design that Health&Safety would have a seizure if it was asked to approve it today.
